Today, we’re looking at the life of an outstanding educator and former Head of English at the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, Alan Durband. Read on to learn more about the life and work of this Liverpool native at liverpool1.one.

Early Life and Education

Alan was born in Liverpool in 1927. His father worked as a ship’s carpenter and was often away at sea, so Alan was raised by his mother and aunt. It’s worth noting that his mother, Edith Durband, was very ambitious for her son. She wanted him to have the best possible future and began saving for his education even before he was born.

As it turned out, Alan’s talents earned him a city scholarship from Matthew Arnold Junior School in Dingle. This allowed him to attend the prestigious Liverpool Institute High School for Boys.

In 1946, the young man won a scholarship to Downing College, Cambridge. He graduated in 1951 and decided to get married the following year.

Teaching Career

Alan Durband returned to teach at the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, where he typically taught senior pupils. His teaching style was known for being creative and engaging, and he never resorted to corporal punishment. Notably, one of his sixth-form English students was a young Paul McCartney.

Furthermore, Durband took on the role of directing school plays, which he staged with great imagination and “modern” interpretations.

He eventually became the Head of English at the school.

Drawing on his experience as a director, Durband wrote a series of textbooks titled ‘English Workshop’. His work gained popularity not only in Liverpool but in schools across the country. From 1986, he also published the highly successful ‘Shakespeare Made Easy’ series of student guides. In addition, he was a passionate advocate for new drama, creating and promoting new plays in collections such as ‘New Directions in English’, ‘Contemporary English’, ‘Playbill’, ‘Prompt’, and ‘Wordgames’.

A Passion for Theatre

In 1964, The Everyman Theatre opened on Hope Street in Liverpool, and Durband was instrumental in bringing this project to life.

For nearly three decades, Alan Durband served as Vice-Chairman, Chairman, and Vice-President of the Theatre Trust. It was Durband who raised thousands of pounds to refurbish the building through innovative seven-year tax-free covenants. The theatre became a beloved Liverpool institution, providing a vital platform for young playwrights and actors to launch their careers.

In 1998, a memorial plaque dedicated to Alan Durband was unveiled at the theatre.

It should be noted that Durband was an atheist and a supporter of left-wing politics; in 1946, he even stood as the Communist Party candidate in a school mock election.

Alan Durband was an outstanding teacher and a remarkable person, whose teachings, worldview, and methods are still remembered by his students long after his death.

Fittingly, the old school building where Durband taught was saved by his former pupil, the world-famous musician Paul McCartney. In 1996, McCartney reopened it as the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). Alan Durband’s former classroom was preserved and marked with a plaque that reads, “The Alan Durband Room”.

Sometimes we don’t realise the immense role teachers play in our lives. But the seeds of their knowledge, experience, and wisdom often grow over the years and eventually bear fruit.

We hope you found this article informative and learned something new about our city’s history.

Education is an essential part of our lives; without a quality education, there can be no future.
