Today, we turn our attention to Walter Crane, a renowned English artist and book illustrator. He is considered one of the most influential illustrators of his generation and left behind a remarkable legacy of beautiful work. Read on to learn more about Crane’s life and art at liverpool1.one.

Born into a Creative Family

The future artist was born in Liverpool in 1845. Walter was the son of Thomas Crane, a portrait painter, and Marie Crane, the daughter of a maltster. Walter also had a brother and a sister; his older brother, Thomas, was also an illustrator, and his sister, Lucy, was a writer.

Naturally, the Liverpool native’s first mentor and teacher was his father. Later, after Thomas Crane’s death, Walter was apprenticed to the wood-engraver William James Linton. It’s worth noting that Linton recognised the young artist’s talent and even helped him secure his first commissions.

Career Development

In 1862, Crane made his debut at the Royal Academy of Arts with his painting ‘The Lady of Shalott’. He soon became a leading figure among a group of young artists who were not always well-received by critics. As Crane and his colleagues were often not exhibited at the Royal Academy, they favoured venues like the Dudley Gallery. He also presented his work at exhibitions of the Society of Painters in Water Colours and at the Grosvenor Gallery.

In 1871, the artist married, and the young couple travelled to Italy for their honeymoon.

Inspired by the beauty of the country, Crane painted ‘The Birth of Venus’. His work was presented at an exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery and was subsequently purchased by the artist George Frederic Watts.

In 1872, Crane painted another of his works, ‘The Death of the Year’. This highly symbolic piece depicts the dead body of the year being mourned by the months. Father Time is shown dressed as a priest, while Love holds a censer.

In 1882, the artist became a member of the Century Guild and began designing stained glass, wallpaper, and ceramic tiles. A year later, he co-founded the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society and served as its first president. The society’s aim was to organise exhibitions to promote the work of artists and designers.

Of course, one cannot overlook Crane’s illustrative work. The artist made a major contribution to the development of book graphics in the country. As early as the 1860s, he and the publisher Edmund Evans began the mass production of children’s books. Together, they produced books on inexpensive paper, making their children’s literature accessible to all classes. It is worth noting that Crane illustrated around 50 books for children.

Managerial Roles and Political Views

The artist’s life was not solely dedicated to creative work. For many years, Crane served as the Director of Design at the Manchester School of Art, was Principal of the Royal College of Art for about a year, and worked as a lecturer. Walter Crane also wrote articles and was one of the first to distinguish between the concepts of graphic and pictorial principles. He even published a book on the subject in 1907.

It should be noted that the famous Liverpool native was directly involved in the publication of political literature. Crane was a supporter of left-wing views.

The artist died in 1915. He was unable to overcome the grief of losing his wife, who had died just three months earlier following a tragic railway accident.

This is the story of a great English artist who left behind an astonishing body of work.
