The future composer grew up in a large family with eight children. It’s worth noting that little Michael was raised in an artistic environment. His father and grandfather were minor composers at St Peter’s Cathedral. His father also worked as an engraver, and his uncle was an organist at the same cathedral. He even wrote sacred music and conducted. Michael Maybrick decided to follow in his relatives’ footsteps. By the age of eight, he could already play the piano, and later he mastered the organ. At just 15, he became the organist at the very cathedral where his relatives worked.

In 1865, the young man travelled to Leipzig to study keyboard and harmony with Carl Reinecke, Ignaz Moscheles, and Louis Plaidy. He then went on to study baritone with Gaetano Nava in Milan.

Developing His Musical Career

Our fellow Liverpudlian’s career began to take off. In 1869, Michael gave a successful performance of “Elijah” in London. Other performances and musical festivals followed, bringing him great success and popularity. He performed as a baritone on leading concert stages in London and in English opera.

In the 1870s, the musician began singing his own songs. His first was “A Warrior Bold,” which he published under the pseudonym Stephen Adams. Another song with a nautical theme, “Nancy Lee,” quickly gained popularity, selling over 100,000 copies in two years. His other works include “The Tar’s Farewell,” “They All Love Jack,” “The Midshipmite,” “Your Dear Brown Eyes,” “The Children of the City,” “The Blue Alsatian Mountains,” “The Star of Bethlehem,” and “The Holy City.”

In 1884, the composer and singer toured New Zealand, where he delighted audiences with his songs.

There was more to the composer’s life than just music.

Besides music, our local legend was also a huge sports enthusiast. He played cricket, was a yachtsman and a cyclist, and even captained the Artists Rifles team.

In 1893, the composer married his housekeeper. The couple moved to the Isle of Wight, in Ryde. He later became a prominent figure on the island and served as the mayor of Ryde five times. It is also said that Michael Maybrick was a Freemason.

The famous English composer died in 1913.

As we can see, the profession of a composer was in demand even centuries ago. A composer’s job is to express feelings, emotions, and moods through music. In the modern era, composers write music for films, plays, pop stars, musicals, and more. A composer also needs to be well-versed in musical styles and be proficient in various musical instruments. They typically write musical pieces for bands, orchestras, singers, and ensembles.

When Michael Maybrick was working, there was no cinema. And there was no such thing as show business. Yet, our fellow Liverpudlian managed to win over the hearts of his listeners and even toured with his own songs. He left behind a wonderful creative legacy that can still be enjoyed today.

We hope our article was informative and that you learned more about this famous local.
