Today we’ll talk about the famous English writer Beryl Margaret Bainbridge, who is known for her works of psychological fiction. From her school years, Bainbridge loved to write. At just ten years old, the girl was already keeping a diary. She also attended elocution lessons. When she was eleven, she took part in a radio show called “Northern Children’s Hour.”

She was later expelled from Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School in Great Crosby after a note with obscene content was found in her possession. Our local celebrity went on to continue her education at Cone-Ripman School.

After finishing school, Bainbridge fell in love with a former German prisoner of war. He was awaiting repatriation, and the couple corresponded for six years. Margaret was waiting for her beloved to return to Great Britain so they could get married. But sadly, permission was denied, and their relationship ended.

A Suicide Attempt and Career Development

After her heartbreak, Bainbridge did eventually marry. Her chosen one was the artist Austin Davies. Just four years after they were married, our fellow Liverpudlian attempted to take her own life. A divorce followed, and she raised her two children alone. Bainbridge began her career as an actress. Our local star also had another partner with whom she lived in a common-law marriage. The couple had a child in 1965.

She had a lot of free time and began to write. Her works were based on events from her childhood. Beryl Margaret Bainbridge’s first novel was called “Harriet Said.” But many publishers refused to release it. It was only in 1972 that the novel was finally published. By then, two other novels by Bainbridge had already been printed.

In the 1970s, our local celebrity wrote and published seven more novels.

Her novel “Injury Time” was also awarded the Whitbread Prize in 1977. She later wrote a screenplay based on her own novel, “Sweet William,” and the film was released in 1980. That same year, she wrote eight more novels! And fifteen years later, the novel “An Awfully Big Adventure” was made into a film.

Historical Fiction: The Writer’s Calling Card

In the 1990s, our fellow Liverpudlian began writing historical fiction novels. Her works were not only popular but also brought her a good income. “Every Man for Himself” is one of her most popular novels, which tells the story of the Titanic disaster. For this novel, the writer received the Whitbread Awards in 1996.

Bainbridge also worked as a theatre critic for a time.

Our local celebrity died of cancer in 2010.

Writing novels, articles, and other works is a difficult job, as you have to work on every single word. This profession doesn’t have a clear schedule or a lunch break, as writers work when they feel inspired, in the right mood, or when they’re in a creative flow. Beryl Margaret Bainbridge found her muse and left behind many wonderful novels. And perhaps the greatest achievement for a writer is when their work is made into a film.

We hope our article was informative and that you learned more about your city and a famous local.

Have you read any of Beryl Margaret Bainbridge’s novels?
