History of the Institution
The history of the Liverpool medical school began in 1834. However, the historic Waterhouse building, where modern classrooms are located, was opened ten years earlier, in 1824. At the time, it was Liverpool Infirmary.
Dr Richard Formby had been lecturing on anatomy and physiology since 1818. He joined forces with colleagues to found a medical school at the Liverpool Royal Institution. By 1844, the medical school was merged with Liverpool Infirmary. In 1851, it was renamed the Liverpool Royal Medical School.
In 1862, the country’s first Training School for Nurses was established. This was done to serve the infirmary and the district nursing service.
In November 1877, a meeting took place between representatives of the Liverpool Association for the Promotion of Higher Education and the Council of the School of Medicine. Their goal was to create a university in Liverpool. As a result, University College Liverpool was founded in 1881.
In 1884, the Royal Infirmary School of Medicine became the Faculty of Medicine. This happened when University College was joined with Victoria University, as well as Owens College in Manchester and Yorkshire College in Leeds.
By 1903, the University of Liverpool had established its independence, paving the way for many provincial medical schools. Furthermore, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine was the first in the world!
In 2011, the Faculty of Medicine was downgraded to a school under the leadership of the new Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
What We Know About the Medical School
The Medical School is located in the 19th-century Cedar House building on Ashton Street. It houses teaching rooms, administrative offices, and a student common room for medical students. The Clinical Skills Resource Centre for clinical training is located in the premises of the Liverpool Royal Infirmary Waterhouse building. There is also a centre for the development of personalised medicine. In addition, the school uses the Human Anatomy Resource Centre for teaching anatomy.
As for degrees, the Medical School offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medicine.
It’s worth noting that medical students have access to specialised hospitals in the country: Alder Hey, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, and The Walton Centre (the only specialised NHS Trust in the UK providing neurological services). During their studies, students use various formats: lectures, clinical skills and anatomy sessions, case studies, and more.
